Michael McAuley

Michael McAuley has over 27 years of legal experience. His practice focuses on international estate planning, establishment of offshore trust structures, drafting employee compensation, insurance, commercial and unit trusts, trusts review and opinion work, and establishment of pension schemes.

Michael first joined Appleby in 1998. He rejoined in 2006. From 2001 until 2006, he was the Clarence W. Edwards Associate Professor at the Paul M. Hebert Law Center of Louisiana State University. There he taught conflict of laws, comparative law, successions, and various property law subjects.

Michael read classics at King’s College London. He graduated with a Bachelor of Civil Law (B.C.L.) in 1977 from McGill University. In 1979, he received a Diplôme d’Études Approfondies (D.E.A.) (with distinction) from Université de Droit, d’Économie et de Sciences Sociales, Paris.

Michael was called to the Bar of Quebec in 1982. From 1983-1990 and again from 1994-1998 he practiced at the firm of McMaster Meighen (now Borden Ladner Gervais) in Montreal. He was called to the Bermuda Bar in 2000.

Michael is a former president of the estates and trusts section of the Canadian Bar Association (Quebec Branch). From 1994-1998 he was chair of the individual tax planning and trusts section of the International Bar Association. He is an academician of the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law and a member of its Executive Council.
